FAQs About Publishing New Books Using KDP; Timelines, Problem-Solving

Publishing a new book on Amazon using KDP is not instantaneous, but it is a relatively fast process.

Timelines vary depending on

  • the format of the book (print or eBook)
  • the functionality (such as connecting books)
  • the shopping features (such as Look Inside the Book).

Here are ten common questions we get from new authors, along with Amazon policies and our experiences. Note that this applies only to KDP and the Amazon.com website.

Bookselling using Seller Central or Advantage varies because they have different standards. And processing times for country-specific stores (Canada, UK, etc.) may take longer.

How long does it take for a Kindle eBook to appear in the Amazon store once it’s been uploaded?

It can take up to 72 hours, but in our experience, a Kindle eBook is available for purchase in about a day.

If your eBook does not appear with 72 hours, contact support via the KDP help page. (The button is at the bottom of the left menu.)

How long does it take for a print book to be available for purchase by readers?

Like eBooks, Amazon states 72 hours, and that is our experience. It rarely takes less time and sometimes it’s more. Print books go through a much more extensive file-check process than is given for printing a proof.

Note that some elements of a print book’s product detail page—such as the book showing as “in stock” or the cover appearing—can take an additional one to two days.

How long does it take for a Kindle eBook to be linked to a print book?

Amazon states this is automatic, and it takes two to seven days. In our experience, this sometimes does not happen (although it is better than it used to be), and in that case you will have to contact their support team.

How long before shoppers can see a sample (called Look Inside the Book, or LITB)?

  • Kindle eBooks: seven to eight days
  • Print books: nine to ten days
  • It is not uncommon to see a message from Amazon saying they are behind in processing books.

Can I change the length of the book sample that Amazon shows to customers?

Yes! The default for new Kindle eBooks is 10 percent, and for paperbacks it is 20 percent. However, you can request a different percentage, depending on the format of your book.

Print books

  • Minimum: 10%
  • Maximum: 80%
  • Default: 20%

Kindle eBook (reflowable; most common)

  • Minimum: 5%
  • Maximum: 45%
  • Default: 20%

Kindle eBook (print replica)

  • Minimum: 10%
  • Maximum: 40%
  • Default: 10%

How do I remove or separate contributor names from my book?

Contributors such as a foreword writer or illustrator appear after the author name, with the term for their contribution in parentheses. The only way to remove this is to remove them from the book’s listing in KDP.

How do I buy author copies of my Kindle book?

You can’t. But here are two alternatives:

1. Lower the price to 99 cents and buy the number you plan to give away. Change the price back. (There is a Buy for others box under the Buy Box on the right.)

2. Email a Mobi file of your eBook. The recipient can transfer that to their Kindle.

  1. Thank you for the great article. For a first-time author, it was incredibly helpful. I do have one question regarding purchasging eBooks to give them away. The lowest I can price my book, according to KDP is $1.99 (I guess because it is a fairly large book with plenty of pictures). Anyway, can I do the same type thing when my book is available for free if I am enrolled in KDP select. Can I buy for others?

    Thank you so much.

  2. I chose wide distribution. How long after publication before the book is available in bookstores outside of Amazon?

  3. I assume you are using IngramSpark. In this case it is up to each store whether they take it and how long it takes. It varies and you need to manually check. Usually it’s 2 to 4 weeks.
