In just two years Amazon’s print-on-demand unit CreateSpace has increased its market share of self-published print books to 62% in 2013 from 37% in 2011. These percentages are based on the number of ISBNs issued by Bowker and outlined in the October 2014 press release, Self-Publishing Continues to Grow in the U.S., Says Bowker. (Full report here.)
Here is a snapshot of the top issuers of ISBNs and the percentage change from the prior year.

What about ISBNs and eBooks?
As reported last year, trying to interpret the state of eBook publishing using ISBNs is a meaningless exercise. The fact that Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Apple and Google do not require an ISBN means that Bowker's numbers are under reported. It is important not read too much into this considering Bowker's financial stake in promoting ISBNs for eBooks.
Small publisher vs. Self-publisher
Bowker does not define what they mean by self-publisher but they do define a small publisher as those publishers who have produced 10 or fewer ISBNs in total.
Small publishers purchase ISBNs from MyIdentifiers.com, usually in blocks of 10 numbers. This enables them to register the ISBNs in the name of their imprint, rather, for example, than have their book show “CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform” as the publisher. Read our post about the 4 ISBN options offered by CreateSpace.
(Owning your own ISBN allows you to print your book at any printer, including any POD printer such as IngramSpark. You cannot print your book at another printer if you use the free CreateSpace ISBN.)
