We divide the self-publishing process—excluding marketing—into six tracks. The self-publishing process flowchart below illustrates the relative order and timing, not necessarily the length of each step. Click the flowchart to enlarge it.
A Flowchart of the Self-Publishing Process
- AuthorImprints manages all six tracks on behalf of you, the publisher.
- The entire process can be as short as 30 days, or as long as a year.
- Dotted lines around a chevron mean that the step is optional.
- Editing is managed separately.
- Clients are free to provide their own book cover, or use our service.
- Print book only? eBook only? Print and eBook? It’s up to you as the publisher.
- Book marketing: Yes, we help clients with book marketing.

After the rights to Leslie Lehr’s prize-winning debut novel, 66 Laps, became available and she was able to wrestle the rights back for Wife Goes On, a novel orphaned by the publisher when the editor left, this author and story consultant had the ideal situation to take control of her back list. We set to work creating new covers, updating publisher’s files, and optimizing the metadata. The new e-book editions are published by Lehr’s imprint, GoodPressBooks. Learn more about author services.
EVANNEX is the world’s largest destination for Tesla aftermarket products. One facet of their marketing program is publishing books and eBooks for Tesla enthusiasts, which promotes their brand and builds their mailing list. Since lead generation was a key objective, and Amazon limits the ways publishers can collect customer information, AuthorImprints solved the problem two ways. For print books, we used Seller Central rather than Advantage. This allowed EVANNEX to build their mailing list because they ship the book to the customer, rather than Amazon. Simplifying matters further, we connected Seller Central with EVANNEX’s Shopify shipping platform, Shipstation. For eBooks, we integrated a call-to-action between the eBooks and their website and included an incentive offer to encourage sign-ups. Learn more about businesses as publishers.
